Poetics

The aim of my meme was to bring all elements of Method, Network, and Witness together and to create a different way to think about the issue of educational inequality and how to make that a more personal connection.  In doing this I had hoped the individual would be linked to the collective or at least get people people thinking about it connects them to the collective.  An issue that stands behind words and projects itself as an issue contained to one select group of the community is far less reaching than an issue that affects both sides of the “successful”.  This emblem brings together both parties of my issue, those who prosper from private institutions with well financed structures and those who must struggle through the uncertainty that is the public school system.  By reminding the populace that they share a community and to “even the scale” by the fair distribution of knowledge is the best way to bring about a positive change to an issue that for many years has been subject to much scrutiny and disagreement.

In truth, my research has brought me to the conclusion that a lack of desire to take responsibility for these issues is what restricts progress in solving the problem.  The collective enjoys looking to the person in what seems to be better standing to make the best decisions for the whole of the collective.  But the problem is that people’s circumstances differ so widely and the ugly truth that most of the population suffers from a lack of resources to better their standing in society is easily swept under the rug and only the achievements of the few privileged are recognized and rewarded.  The emblem along with the grid that provides knowledge of the financial situation of the education system out in front of the Hawaii state capitol building will hopefully serves a reminder to people that the responsibility to actively know what’s happening around them so that they can make wise decisions when it comes to education and legislature is the responsibility they must have to change their situations.
